BONA MAN

At one time, the New Year in the territory of Rocca Pietore it was lived very differently than today and was not celebrated on the evening of the 31st with dinners and balls, but it was expected, with a great sense of community, that the children of the village would pass through the houses to wish a peaceful and happy new year in the morning of January 1st.

The children, with the joy that distinguishes them, went from door to door to extend their wishes with the following sentence:

Bondì e bon an,

a mi la bona man!

Adults used to give thanks by offering the “bona man“, which was usually represented by delicacies, sweets and in the most fortunate cases some money.

Even today it is possible to find some children who on January 1st go to offer New Year’s greetings in his neighborhood.

I PAGARUOI

The first holiday of the year is the Epiphany and for the occasion in Rocca Pietore it is still tradition to light the “pagaruoi“, or the propitiatory bonfires.

At one time, based on the directions that the flames took, predictions were made on what the year to come would be.

These bonfires are lit on the evening of January 5 and can symbolize the greeting to the old year that is burned and the welcome to the new one, purified by the fire.

An important figure of the pagaruoi is the “donàza“, which is none other than the Ladin version of the befana.

LA MASCOREDA

The traditional Ladin carnival of Sottoguda carnival and the Laste carnival.

It is a festival with ancient origins but still very much felt today, respecting the ancient tradition of “Mascorèda“, the parade through the streets of the various villages of a procession made up of typical masks: the Capomàscora, the Matazìn, the Lachè and the Mascore de legn expertly hand carved and all different from each other in size and expression.

Each figure of this ancient carnival has its role, starting from Headmasterwho directs the procession, i Matazin and the Lachè completely dressed in colored silk handkerchiefs and paper flowers, they wear a belt of cowbells and an original headdress. Mascore de legni characteristic characters with hand-carved masks in pine wood, each one different from the other.

All this procession is accompanied by the notes of popular <a
